It was the day of the procedure, and I was nervous. I wasn't going through anything, but I was anxious for Kelly. We'd hashed out all the details of the contract to both of our likings. So I was confident about going forward. I'd also enjoyed sparring with Kelly. She was a formidable negotiator and a strong woman. Just what I would need if I wanted a wife.

The universe had chosen well for me, but I didn't want to get involved that way.

I was playing with fire, keeping Kelly this close to me. I knew that, but it was a test. I'd have to give your up at some point, let her go, since her dreams would probably lead her somewhere else. My heart might break, but Kelly would never know. I wouldn't hold her back because even if we were never to be lovers, we were friends at least.

I couldn't hold her back from what she truly wanted. I did have some ideas of what might keep her here, but I hadn't brought them up yet. Our focus had been on this contract. Then I'd made some transfers to pay her mortgage. Parting with that money hadn't been a big deal. Honestly, I had billions. I wouldn't miss it in the least.

I hadn't organized the house's renovation yet, but I would. Kelly had wanted this procedure out of the way before we did anything else.

I marveled that she was willing to pursue her dreams even when she was pregnant. The situation took away my breath. I'd get to watch Kelly get larger with my child. I'd feel the kicks and see the heartbeat at the doctor's appointments. Then there would be a baby.

My baby.

My heart was full, and I had Kelly to thank for it. We'd been warned that the procedure might not take the first time, but I could be hopeful.

I parked in front of Kelly's house, ready to take her to the doctor's office. We were going all the way to Boise, but the appointment wasn't until late morning, so we had time.

What I didn't like was that Chase's truck was here. He was climbing out with his thousand-dollar smile on display. I wondered how much it would cost him if I punched him in the mouth. Of course, I wouldn't, but right now, I wanted to. Kelly and I had signed a contract, but that didn't mean she couldn't still sell to Chase if he offered her the right bait.

"Jed."

"Chase," I said, no warmth in my voice.

"You seem to be here a lot."

"I could say the same for you."

We stood a few feet apart, and there was a rush of testosterone in the air. I wasn't afraid of Chase. He was a human, and I could rip out his throat in wolf form. My wolf wanted to come out and do just that because Chase seemed like a threat at the moment.

Chase shrugged and stood down. He turned away and walked to Kelly's porch. I didn't trust the man, but I knew Kelly could stand independently.
